Lake Lure Flowering Bridge
It’s amazing what you might come across while driving along U.S. Route 64 in North Carolina. This highway stretches and winds its way through the mountains to the outer banks, covering 604 miles. What makes this route so unique is not just the length but also the towns and places that are all along the way. On this adventure, the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge is one of those places along the way.
Originally built in 1925, it was later decommissioned in 2011. The bridge is now celebrating its tenth anniversary after finding new life in 2013 thanks to the Friends of Lake Lure Flowering Bridge. The 155-foot span of the bridge is now covered with several different themed gardens, including one for children and dogs. As the brochure states, it truly is a gateway to somewhere beautiful.
On this particular day, I could not have timed this visit any better, arriving just before sunset after a passing storm. The golden hour light brought out a vibrant color palette across the sky as well as a showcase of the seven colors of the rainbow. A verse like Psalm 8:3, "When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place," comes to mind, but these words would not just be whispered; they would be screamed. This is a canvas only God could make. This makes for a moment I won't soon forget.
