Dry Falls

Dry Falls is located off Highway 64, a couple of miles from Bridal Veil Falls in the Nantahala National Forest of the Highlands, NC. This 75-foot waterfall is a short hike from the parking area, and I have heard it is named after being able to walk behind the falls and stay dry; maybe that is true depending on the season. The change of perspective is welcomed and is what I appreciate the most about this waterfall. The initial view is spectacular from the left side as you begin your walk down to the falls. Once you make your way behind the falls, the up-close and personal experience of the water falling below is powerful to witness in sight and sound. The view from the right side of the falls adds even more dimension.

In seasons of discouragement or despair in our own lives inside and out, we can feel like we are at the bottom of this waterfall; maybe we have fallen from a great height, maybe quickly, to be buried deep, not just by the pounding water but by heavy, never-ending noise. In Psalms 42:7, the psalmist, in his despair, describes this beautifully.

Deep calls to deep
at the roar of your waterfalls;
all your breakers and your waves
have gone over me.
Psalms 42:7 ESV

But no matter how great the depth, no matter how far we have sunk, God's depth can reach us. Though waterfalls may be great, they are still his, and he is with us. No matter how many billows and waves cover us, they can be measured. How great is our God, and how massive are the dimensions of love he has for us that he can meet us wherever we are and take us higher with Jesus! (Ephesians 3:17-19)
