Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower

Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower is located off the Blue Ridge Parkway near milepost 409. Built in 1941, this steel structure is 70 feet tall and is one of the largest fire towers in western North Carolina. The trail is about 1.5 miles there and back. There is a lot to admire as you make the climb to the base of the tower. Along the pathway, there are a variety of butterflies, bees, wildflowers, and other plants to keep you company. The top platform of the tower is closed off, but there are a few smaller platforms as you make your way up the narrow stairways. The surrounding views of the mountains and valleys are breathtaking, as you are gazing from about 5,340 feet above sea level. If you are ever in this part of the world, I recommend taking a moment to take a look from a different perspective.
